The one thing every New Yorker covets -- next to the inside scoop on a rent-controlled apartment -- is the intimate knowledge that their sushi place is the best sushi place of all time. In this case, followers of Tomoe may be onto something. Its celebrity quotient is no match for Nobu; its Japanese businessman quotient is no match for Sushi of Gari; and its cocktail quotient is no match for Sushi Samba. But there's something about this West Village go-to that keeps the waiting list full forever and lines around the block. The menu includes a flag of Japanese cooked dishes, like broiled squid, steamed clam broth and tatsuta (fried chicken). But it's the schools of sushi and rolls that turn skeptics into droolers. Fulton Fish Market-fresh, no-frills in presentation and cut as big as Loch Ness herself, the offerings are plentiful and straightforward. After toro and eel, the most exotic it really gets is a shiso and mountain yam hand roll or sea urchin sushi. As can be expected from a superior sushi spot, their specs can sometimes be idiosyncratic -- call ahead to confirm hours.

Used to be better
By Anorthstar on 06/26/2008
This place used to be great. The owner used to filet the fish in front of the sushi bar. He would also pick and buy the fish early in the morning. Didn't let anyone else handle the fish. Now that he is semi retired, the other chef now filet and buys the fish. The owner never give out the brownish part of the yellow tail, and instead used that part for cooking. Now, the chiefs are more economical and serve as much of the fish as sushi as possible. The quality has went down. I used to go to this place much in the late 1990's to the early 2000's. Now its just an over priced sushi place with out the owner. I will pass.... Good luck in the owner's retirement!

Absolutely Atrocious
By diesel4680 on 05/20/2007
I went to this restaurant expecting to be impressed. These high expecations were a result of stellar reviews that put this place on the same level as some of the greats (Gari, Yasuda, Seki, 15 East, Jewel Bako, etc.). I have never been more disappointed by a sushi experience in my life. The sushi was comparable to that of a mom and pop local sushi spot in a rural area in the midwest. It was vile. I am sick of reading reviews by these so-called "food critics" who clearly know nothing about sushi. I have been to all of the good ones and there is no way that Tomoe is in the same realm as any of them. Even if it was just an off night, I say a great sushi restaurant doesn't have off nights.
