Even if you're not the kind of person to get worked up over an old piece of furniture, it's hard to ignore the wonderful old mahogany bar left over from the 1930's on the ground floor of Edward's Steakhouse. It's an imposing slab with a timeworn aura that you can't fake, built into the kind of building -- a three-story 1890s townhouse -- no one builds anymore. Chef Edward Gozdz, architect of the $41 Kobe beef burger at Chelsea's Old Homestead, brings an old fading glamour to his eponymous meatery. Edward's menu is a throwback to the days when the portly middle straining against a pinstriped vest signified respectability, tight money, and sound credit. You are perfectly free to order anything you like, so long as it is steak: New York sirloin, filet mignon, or porterhouse. Or, choose something equally substantial: lamb shank, rack of lamb, sesame-crusted tuna, or the fish du jour. "I don't want to be arrogant," says Gozdz (actually managing not to sound it, despite stints at the Post House and Cite), "but people tell us we're the best steak, by far, in Jersey City."

Loved it
By brookg30 on 02/16/2008
My sister and I had a gift certificate to Edward's purchased from restaurant.com. I asked many people if they knew of this place and nobody I asked had even heard of it. Then I went on city guide and got nervous due to all the negative reviews, but we figured we would give it a try anyway. I was pleasantly surprised from the moment I walked in. The decor was lovely, the waitstaff was friendly, and the food was delicious. I went with two others who agreed completely. We had the petit filet, the stuffed shrimp, and the tuna. All three of us will be back.

Arrogant Chef
By robemet on 06/10/2006
I was dining with 5 people, and there was no doubt that the ribeye i ordered was cooked too much (i like it medium rare, there wasn't anything even close to pink about it). Our waiter was very apologetic, when he returned with the same steak, cut in HALF by the chef when i sent it back, as if to say "customer, you don't know what you're talking about." I eat at a lot of steakhouses, and that has never happened to me before. I had to send it back a second time, and didn't get my steak until my dining companions were all finished. The manager on duty was horrified at the chef, and comped both my steak and an entire round of desserts, which was nice of him to do. But I have a hard time forking over money to a chef who thinks he's slumming it by working in Jersey City, and that his patrons are idiots.
