The words "Hoboken" and "Bar" are harmless enough on their own, but they can be lethal when mentioned in tandem. The nightlife capital of North Jersey is rife with chaotic watering holes where frat boys split pitchers and the music splits eardrums. The Madison Bar and Grill stands in dignified contrast, like an art-house theater down the block from a multiplex. Comprising a bar up front and a separate dining room, the Madison offers a varied menu of appetizers (fried oysters, sashimi tempura, seafood ceviche), a raw bar, inspired salads (seared ahi tuna, ruby red grapefruit, roasted beet), and upscale entrees (black sea bass, marinated hanger steak, filet mignon). But don't be put off by the swanky selections: The lunch menu features bar pies, sandwiches and burgers. Catch the jazz brunch on Sunday, martini night on Tuesday or Wednesday's lobster soiree. And mind the age minimum in the bar after 8PM: 25 for men, 23 for women. -- Matt Cheplic

Plenty of other places to go...
By ktoofish on 09/14/2008
Probably had the worst meal and service in a very long time. 3 of us dined on a Friday night and not one of us had anything positive to say about our food. Needless to say, we don't recommend going here for dinner, but if you do, at least stay away from... The Spinach Artichoke Dip (freezer burnt) Cream of Mushroom Soup (delivered without mushrooms) Angel Hair Pasta w/Seafood (tasted like Ramen noodles) Risotto (more salt than the ocean; risotto with pork chops should have been a warning sign). The Calamari was the only decent dish - and who can screw up fried Calamari?

BEST SPOT EVER!!!
By LovelyerInPerson on 06/11/2008
ok...where to start. I've gone for the drinks, I've gone for the food, I've gone for the hang out AND every single time I go, it's wonderful. The service is top notch. I am a BIG customer service chick and BIGGER on food servicing. They treat you like you're the only one in the restaurant/pub and THAT, my friend, says a lot about a place that gets overwhelmingly packed. The food is totally worth bragging about and living down the block makes me very very happy. I go there often and will continue going. EVERYTHING and EVERYONE is fantastic.

Nothing fancy. Just good food, pleasant and efficient wait staff, nice selection, with wide price range. Never been even close to disappointed.

WOW!

I've long talked about going to the Madison to see what all the hype is about but didn't make it a priority because a lot of the hype in Hoboken is just that. I wandered in for lunch on a Monday and was seated in the bar. It happened to be restaurant week and I chose the 3 course lunch for $15. Everything from the salad to the burger to the gelato was excellent. How nice to have a burger actually cooked as I ordered it (medium rare.) The waiter could have been more attentive but the overall experience was very positive. Based on my lunch experience I made reservations for a group of 8 for that Friday. I have to say that my dinner experience was even better than my lunch experience. Our table was ready on time and the dining room is well spaced so that you don't feel overcrowded. The service was A-1 as was the food. Again, restaurant week prevailed with a 3 course dinner for $30. Truly amazing salmon was the highlight. I can't wait to go back and try the a la carte menu. I can't believe I waited so long!
