The one thing in common in the pantheon of top pizza places -- John's, Lombardi's, Grimaldi's -- is that despite all the partisan politics and in-fighting, they all strive to make their version of the perfect pie. Judging by all the foodblog chatter among slicehounds and pieheads, add to that great group Una Pizza Napoletena, which claims its New Jersey and Neapolitan roots date back thousands of years to Pompeii and the age of "man and fire." While you think about history, chew on facts: the 12-inch pies come out of the brick oven crisp and chewy and uncut. Fired up with fine ingredients like extra virgin olive oil, San Marzano tomatoes, Sicilian sea salt and buffalo mozzarella. In some circles, the young owner is legendary, drawing people to make cult-like pilgrimages to his perfect pies. And it's only because of this that his establishment survives otherwise quirky rules: no delivery, cash only, closed Mondays through Wednesday and other days when dough runs out, and no liquor license (though it is BYOB).

The very best anywhere
By StevenWolf1 on 09/16/2008
This pizza is absolutely the best anywhere and I've tried them all. Pizza as it was meant to be, simple, mouthwatering goodness straight from the wood-fired oven. A product elegant in its simplicity, Una Pizza will leave you *craving* it forever.

Look down at New Yorkers sell them crap...

and the will love it. Why anyone would think of this overpriced, over-hyped place as a source of good pizza is entirely beyond me. From the $20+ tiny pies to the very rude and condescending staff to their Cash only policy (Read: Tax scam) I am amazed people are willing to make this anything other than what it is an obnoxious snob fest masquerading as good pizza which should be more soulful and down to earth. The best. Stop.

This is absolutely the closest thing to a real pizza napoletana in Naples. Lombardi's, Di Faro, Totonno make good pizzas, yes (Grimaldi's was disappointing to me) but THIS is more or less what a very good pizza is where pizza was born! Yes, it is totally overprized. But we are talking about the best (neapolitan) pizza in USA.
