Whiskey Bar   

Whiskey Bar is down at the train station end of Washington Street, which might make Hoboken vets a little frightened. There's plenty of good rock and roll to be had further up the street, but the low numbers on Washington Street are better known for ex-frat dudes than for rock and roll. Whiskey Bar is hardly a teetotallers paradise -- with a name like Whiskey Bar you thought there wouldn't be beer specials, happy hours and, yes, whiskey -- but it does work hard for its rock and roll credibility. The bands that rock the Whiskey are generally local rock acts and Hoboken/North Jersey staples like Love Seed Mama Jump and their jammy ilk, but the sound is good, the beer is comparatively cheap -- particularly during the week, when domestic beers can drop to a mere two bucks a bottle -- and the dance floor is always full and enthusiastic. Everyone knows that Hoboken knows how to rock, but it's nice to see that, even down on the beefiest, most un-rocking stretch of Washington, that rock and roll rule holds true. -- D.J. Roth
