For many longtime residents of North Jersey, fall didnt truly begin until the annual pilgrimage to the farms of Montvale and Woodcliff Lake to gorge on fresh apple cider and sugared donuts hot from the fryer. Today, most of those farms are memories, but DePiero Country Farm remains to supply the community with fresh picked produce, apple cider in season and terrific bakery goods. The current farm market and the surrounding fields have belonged to the DePiero family since 1924. Today, they cultivate 250 acres in Montvale and New Paltz, New York. In season, DePieros market carries homegrown apples and peaches as well as broccoli, green beans, zucchini, eggplant, cucumbers and more. Homegrown produce is available by the bushel and half-bushel as well as by the pound. Their prices are often well below that of the surrounding supermarkets. DePieros Country Farm is open year round. It supplements its own produce with specialty products like exotic mushrooms, baby lettuce, and hard-to-find items like Thai lemongrass and kohlrabi. Local office workers have discovered the markets soup and salad bar and made it a happening midweek lunch spot. The farm also houses a popular bakery, craft store and garden center. Fall weekends often include special family events like hayrides through the fields, pumpkin painting contests and outdoor stands carrying on the tradition of selling fresh apple cider and hot donuts. DePieros Country Farm is open year round from 7:30AM to 6PM Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday through Saturday, the hours are 7:30AM until 7PM. L.Barile
