The award-winning Doris and Ed's is located in a restored 100-year-old hotel on the shores of Sandy Hook Bay. And even though it has been warmly welcomed by the local folk since 1978, don't take that to mean that the place is trapped in the era of tube tops and 'Charlie's Angels.' The eclectic menu is divided into two sections: "the shore today" and "the shore yesterday." Today's shore food serves up gourmet fare like cedar-planked Florida grouper with a rock shrimp salsa, salmon en croute in a cabernet reduction, or an extremely fresh vidalia crusted halibut with lobster hash and pineapple butter. If you're not feeling quite that fancy, you can enjoy lower brow fare off "the shore yesterday" section. That includes steamers, crab cocktails and any kind of fish or crustacean you want fried. Go ahead and enjoy the unhealthy stuff, since you won't know how it affects how you look in your bathing suit until after you get home. Doris & Ed's has a "shore" kind of attitude on some things, but beach attire is not permitted. -- Stephanie Portnoy

We went there in June 2005 prior to a James Taylor concert at PNC Arts Center. The food was EXCELLENT (a little pricy). The staff WAS a tad on the snooty side, and shorts are not allowed which is stupid in this day anf age.
