An offshoot of the popular leaf-and-java emporium located on Manhattan's Ninth Avenue, this one -- right in the manic heart of Hoboken -- is pretty snug but smells great nonetheless; must be all those bags of beans, strategically left open to catch your fancy. You can practically smell their perfumes way out on the sidewalk. Though there aren't any tables to be had, this is the place in Hoboken to grab an espresso on the run or cart home a few pounds of Kona, Blue Mountain or Darjeeling for your private caffeinated pleasure. There's also a densely packed array of various tea- and coffee-related paraphernalia, a corner photo gallery of local java junkies who frequent the place, and plenty of gift items. If you love coffee and/or tea, this place should perk you up.

of course it's the best!!!!

My high school is directly arcross the street from Emprie,, so it's easy to say that I borderline worship the place. But in additon to the coffee, Emprie has amazing muffins and snacks. They sell off-beat little things you probably won't find again - at least not for awhile. If you're in Hoboken, it's definitely a place to make time and visit!

Empire Closed

The last time I was in Hoboken, I looked for Empire (I loved their Viennna Roast). It's gone, replaced by a political campaign office. I have to agree with the former review that Empire was a coffee store and not a coffee house, but I still hate to see it go, and to see people now have to walk across the street to Dunkin Donuts for their cup of java. What Empire did, it did well. And Hoboken should watch out--Washington Street is becoming a mall with the likes of Dunkin Donuts and Cold Stone Creamery replacing Empire and the little ice cream chop that was on the same block.

Coffeehouse--huh??
By jessicaneealexis on 02/03/2005
How does this place warrant inclusion on a listing of coffeehouses?? As a place to buy coffee and tea it isn't bad--as a matter of fact, it is a nice place with nice people in it--but it certainly isn't a place to go to hang out or enjoy coffeeo nthe premises. Dunkin' Donuts is more of a coffeehouse than this place is. What's up?
