Just Jake's enjoys a Jekyll-and-Hyde existence. By day it's a sedate, well-mannered neighborhood joint. Sunday brunch begins at 11AM and offers up favorites like eggs Benedict, steak and eggs, french toast -- even a kids' menu. Linger a while and enjoy some football, with the satellite beaming in games from all around the league. Just Jake's is welcoming on weekday afternoons, a place to hide out for a quick drink. But Mr. Hyde emerges with the rising of the moon, as if accompanied by a sinister boogie-woogie soundtrack. Or is that sound one of the high decibel cover bands that hit the stage on weekends? Meanwhile, the cigarette smoke starts hanging thick in the bar and the bouncers -- larger than you and your friends combined -- report to duty at the front door, keeping the lines slow and deliberate. It's not a spot for quiet conversation, but with everyone jammed cheek-to-jowl, you're bound to see some fetching faces. -- Matt Cheplic
