You have to admire the strategy: Tempt diners to a new Japanese establishment by naming it after Japan's most ubiquitous beer. This downtown New Brunswick sushi and steak house is sectioned into three rooms: walk-up bar, sushi bar/lounge and a sizzling hibachi table. (Watch for flying shrimp from crazed, knife-wielding chefs.) The combination of sushi lounge and hibachi deliver a plentiful variety of servings. You can get more than 40 types of rolls, including the rare "ta roll" includes fried taro root w/ kampo. Other menu notables include a salty, dark green seaweed salad and a warm, Japanese mixed broth of broiled eggplant and miso soup called nasu shikiyaki, which rivals chicken noodle soup as the common cold remedy (or so they claim). Aside from owner Wen Chen making a spectacle of serving up sake bombs at the bar, Sapporo carries Shima (Japanese Zima) and a traditional after-dinner drink called daluma (sake and plum wine). What's more, Sapporo is one of the last Japanese steakhouses that generously serves complimentary noodles with your hibachi dinner.

A regular for many years
By katenjay on 03/04/2007
Wen the owner always greets you with a friendly smile. Regulars usually get their favorite seat at the sushi bar. They also have a full Japanese menu as well as the hibachi grills. The sushi is very fresh and you can always as the chef to make up your very own "special" roll. The service is okay under normal conditions but can get slow when it is very busy. Ask Wen about his recent vacation trip to some exotic treasure. The place can use a little sprucing up... Overall, a good place to go.

TERRIBLE SERVICE
By janustst on 02/15/2007
If you ever get a seat or get your food, eat in a hurry. We had reservations for 4 at Sapporo one night. After waiting for roughly an hour and a half we were finally seated. The staff continued to ignore a full table for another 45 minutes at which point I complained to the manager. Our orders were taken (by a rather surly waitress, I might add) and the food eventually served. As we were STILL EATING they gave us our checks and said we needed to pay now b/c they had to close. On top of that, they started vacuuming around our table. We were there so late because they DIDN'T SEAT US, AND THEN MADE US WAIT OVER 45 MINUTES TO TAKE OUR ORDER. At that point we gave up, since obviously none of the staff (including the manager) gave a darn about our business. I will NEVER go to Sapporo again, and would recommend that you avoid them as well.

As a rutgers college student and an avid sushi fan, i can honestly say this is the best sushi i have had in jersey. The prices are college wallet friendly and the staff is so attentive and nice! Definitely a good time
