Starland Ballroom   

If you grew up listening to Jersey radio, you've heard the words "Hunka Bunka Ballroom in Sayreville." There's an odd music to the phrase, even for those who never set foot in the vast, faintly industrial-looking old building that was once Hunka Bunka. The Hunka Bunka is no more. Where once there was Jersey's reigning meat market discotheque, there is now the Starland Ballroom. New image, too: Hunka Bunka's myriad bars now serve concertgoers, and its macro-scale sound system is put to use by a lively mix of mainstream rock and pop bands, with some hardcore and metal thrown in (this is still Jersey, after all). Starland's bookings range from screamo stalwarts the Used to smart-pop Jersey boys Fountains of Wayne to male menopause types like David Lee Roth and Styx. -- D.J. Roth
