Springsteen's stomping grounds. It's perhaps the most well-known small rock club in America. Yet it must be said that things have gone somewhat downhill for both Asbury and its rock scene since the Pony's opening in 1974. But, after ownership changes, sporadic shutdowns and renovations in the late '90s, the Stone Pony is almost all the way back. The stage is a pretty lively place these days. Old schoolers like Gary U.S. Bonds, Leon Russell and Patti Smith are good for several performances a year, but, more and more, the Pony is booking major contemporary acts. Local bands still get plenty of weekday burn, and Thursday's ladies night dance party brings in big crowds. Despite the Boss-era mementos on the wall, the Stone Pony isn't done writing Jersey rock history. -- D.J. Roth
