In a downtown full of restaurants striving to be chi-chi, the Summit is totally down to earth, and a memorable place to visit or to designate as your own local hangout. It's friendly and easygoing, full of local characters, and has an aura of history. You are reminded that no amount of clever design can replicate the atmosphere generated by 60 years of continuous usage. Summit Diner is famed for its breakfasts -- heaping towers of pancakes served with sausage and eggs. On Saturday mornings you'll have to wait outside for your turn at one of the eight booths or a seat at the counter. There are all the usual lunch and dinner items -- Taylor ham and cheese, turkey clubs, chicken soup or Yankee Pot Roast, done with an old-fashioned disregard for cholesterol counting.
