Jersey shore seafood is generally fried, chewy and not exactly gourmet. Kazu Mukai, the Osaka-born sushi maestro behind Sushi by Kazu, is trying to change all that. Sushi by Kazu is tiny, but the food is very big. The full menu of hot appetizers and main courses is popular, but downashore Japanophiles come to Kazu for the raw, not the cooked. The popular Tina Don, an appetizer of marinated raw tuna and sushi rice, is a nice setup for one of Kazu's sushi creations. A seat at the sushi bar affords a view of the man himself as he puts together simple nigiri sushi and more extravagant hand and cut rolls (daily specials keep the menu fresh); due to the small size of the dining room, a seat at one of the six tables offers about the same view. It's BYOB, but, with a liquor store next door, securing a Sapporo or Kirin shouldn't be a problem. -- D.J. Roth

Not worth it!

I've been to sushi bars all over the state, Kazu is mediocre at best! I found them to be over-priced and NOT worth the hipe. If you want the real deal, you must try Mr.Pi's Sushi in Metuchen. It is by far the best sushi I've ever had.

THE REAL DEAL!
By Blueheronintl on 06/11/2008
I remember when Kazo was a sushi chef at another local restaurant. I have been going to SUSHI BY KAZU since they opened and they are by far the very BEST!!! Kazu is imaginative with his creations and Mayumi-san is friendly and warm with her beautiful smile - always. But the real reason to go to SUSHI BY KAZU is the sushi , sashimi and exciting creative appetizers.. TUNA TATAKI is phemonimal, as is his signature dish SPICY TUNA DON... I WISH I COULD GIVE THEM 10 STARS but I cant! I cant wait to go again! EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT!

Best Food Ever!!!!!!

Sushi by Kazu is really & truly my favorite restaurant ever. I have only ever received the freshest fish. My husband & I always get the Sashimi Deluxe, but we also always get wasabi dumplings (no one does these as well as Kazu; just the right amount of kick), and a special roll or two. I have never been disappointed with a dish. The beef tataki is lovely, the tuna don delicious too. My husband is a big fan of the spicy pork miso; whenever this special is available, he is sure to order. The restaurant may be small, but the atmosphere is very welcoming. Kazu's wife, Mayumi, always has a friendly smile and is happy to say hello. We always enjoy inviting her into our conversations. The wait-staff has always been attentive and friendly too. It feels like eating with a group of friends. It is on the expensive side, but only because every bite is worth it. I have paid less for sushi in the area, but I have never gotten more than I get at Kazu.
