Celebrity chef Mario Batali's Babbo is probably always going to be among the most sought-after reservations in town. Instantly catapulted to the top of the heap upon opening in 1998, Babbo's unflinching attitude toward authenticity brought new tastes, such as the notorious beef cheek ravioli, into the mainstream. Batali widens the palate with salami from unheard-of parts of a pig and other delicacies like lamb's tongue and sweetbreads, while also serving gussied-up versions of foods that would normally make you turn up your nose, like sardines, tripe and calf's brain. Game New Yorkers ingest it all without complaint. The pasta tasting menu -- seven courses matched with wines -- is a meal you'll tell your grandchildren about, and the rest of the dishes change nightly according to season. Batali has a Midas touch with any ingredient traditionally used by Italian peasants. He'll make you pay handsomely for it, but Babbo consistently serves such a transcendent meal, no one leaves feeling fleeced. -- Erin Franzman

Not what I expected

I finally made it to Babbo for dinner. The food was excellent as well as the service. BUT the experience was marred by loud rock and roll music. Maybe it is just me, but I like to have a nice conversation while eating dinner. The music was very loud and the selection more for a hopping bar scene (Purple Haze, Can't Get No Satisfaction, etc.) Management was uncompromising to our requests for a new selection or at least a lower volume stating Mario wanted it this way and no changes were permitted. Mario needs to change his website to say everything is authentic Italian EXCEPT for the ambiance of this establishment.

What a charming Italian restaurant.. Such a warm feel. As I sat at the bar with my husband waiting for our table, I watched as plate after plate went by and couldn't wait to induldge. When the parpadelle with ragu went past me I noticed immediately. I was ready! After the appitizer course I tried to maintain my enthusiasm. but by the end of our meal I felt empty that I had not had the meal I was hopeful to have. I love the show and have tried many of his recipes but the menu is so so and the food misses the mark in distinction and flavor. He is capable of so much more....
