Celebrity chef Mario Batali's Babbo is probably always going to be among the most sought-after reservations in town. Instantly catapulted to the top of the heap upon opening in 1998, Babbo's unflinching attitude toward authenticity brought new tastes, such as the notorious beef cheek ravioli, into the mainstream. Batali widens the palate with salami from unheard-of parts of a pig and other delicacies like lamb's tongue and sweetbreads, while also serving gussied-up versions of foods that would normally make you turn up your nose, like sardines, tripe and calf's brain. Game New Yorkers ingest it all without complaint. The pasta tasting menu -- seven courses matched with wines -- is a meal you'll tell your grandchildren about, and the rest of the dishes change nightly according to season. Batali has a Midas touch with any ingredient traditionally used by Italian peasants. He'll make you pay handsomely for it, but Babbo consistently serves such a transcendent meal, no one leaves feeling fleeced. -- Erin Franzman

Service was terrible. Out of six people seated one was given bread. Had to request additional bread twice, water twice. Food was good but have had much better. Requested waiter to check with chef reqgarding special request but he did not, although he made it seem like he did. Overall, I am surprise this has a top pick next to it.

Excellent food, great dining experience...upstairs is the place to be...don't want to be down, very crowded...the sommelier was extremely down-to-earth and helpful in picking a great wine...all the wait staff were attentive and friendly...would definitely recommend and go again

Listen, I know what good Italian food is supposed to taste like.First, I would say that the gelato and sorbet are the best on earth. I would hasten to add that the rest of the menu items with exception of ravioli are awful. Pretentious. Basically, a rip off, in a cold and uncomortable. Go to his pizza place and get the sorbetti/gelato. Do not go here unless you are a glutton for punishment.
