In a city like New York, you'll find more than a few places boasting burgers for the business-class: Kobe-raised, truffle-stuffed or otherwise gussied up. The Corner Bistro is not one of these places. Here your condiment options are simple: onions, bacon, lettuce, tomato and a square of American cheese. It's precisely this back-to-basics approach that keeps the Bistro on various best-of lists, year after carnivorous year. Of course, it helps that the joint's signature Bistro burger, teetering atop a paper plate, delivers serious beef without the bucks. Ditto the house chili, which almost requires a fork and knife, and French fries, which come crispy and steaming hot. (The menu also lists a grilled chicken sandwich, but rumors of its existence have not been substantiated.) As for the atmosphere: Think dim lighting, wood panels and a hasty turnover during the after-work and late-night peaks. Given the place's popularity and walk-in policy, you'll probably wait a while before being seated -- but not to worry. There's good music in the jukebox, friendly faces at the bar, and an endless supply of cheap draft ales. -- Nate Chinen

No stones unturned

A real Village personality brought me here back in 1975 and claimed that it was really an alcholics bar. AS I waited paintintly I was mused with stories of waking up in Puerto RIco and not knowing why at the bar and there were plenty competeing with that one. However, I sat down and had one of their giagiantic burgers (which we mused were probably used to sober up these poor souls) and I had to admit - just one and I was coming back for more. However, the athmosphere proved too rough on a second chance (AA Members sort of clickish) and we had to ignore the

I have eaten at the top 5

Corner Bistro is number 1 on my list. I am a Burger lover from Omaha steak burgers to the local diner. Island Burgers should be 2nd on the list with Corner Bistro's first. I could do without the fries at Corner bistros Mcdonalds still has the best fries. But there Corner Bistros burgers are second to none. I also want to add that I have eaten a burger at everyone of the top 5 on this list.
