Legend has it that Jersey superstar Bruce Springsteen and drummer Vini Lopez decided to form their early band, Steel Mill, over a cup of coffee at this hip restaurant, located in a renovated house a short walk from the shore. This local haunt (in the town where Springsteen was born, no less) is a lot more than just a spot to sit and plan stardom. The Inkwell offers a wide selection of coffee-based drinks, including a half-dozen house specialties like Dutch coffee, a heart-stopping blend of coffee, butter, cream and sugar, topped with a not-so-healthy dollop of whipped cream. When the weather's hot, try an Inkacino, a frozen blend of milk or coffee that comes in cappuccino, peanut butter mocha and cookies-and-cream flavors. Tea drinkers aren't ignored either, with ten chai teas to choose from. The menu offers a selection of good, low-priced eats making for a fun, cheap evening out -- especially during weekly open mic nights or any of the other regular live music events. -- Jeanne O'Brien

Not the same Inkwell
By Islander173 on 03/22/2009
Hi Kids - the reviewer has some facts wrong. This is not the same Inkwell where Bruce used to hang out - that was the old Inkwell where I worked at the corner of Brighton Ave & Second Ave, where it is now located. I still worked there when it moved to these smaller quarters in 1978 or 1979. We never felt at home there, it was cramped, carpeted (ugh) and lacking in the authenticity that the old high ceilinged place with dark red walls had. We were a rag tag crew, Joe DiStasio, the old beatnik owner with the volatile temper and his hippie crew. We all worked together so well that many of us roomed together in the West End, lots of us married and are still close friends to this day. The new place lacks the same spirit, but that probably can't be helped, despite the transplanted paintings. Nowadays, there's a place to get cappucino on every corner. Joe Inkwell was decades ahead of his time. I did wait on the Grateful Dead, Meatloaf, Todd Rundgren, Kitty Carlisle (??) and my dear friends in the Asbury Jukes and E Street banders all the time, even before they could afford a cheeseburger BASKET, meaning with the fries. It was a wonderful time, but it's a little off to have this place claiming the history of and soul of the original Inkwell.

I moved to Florida in 96' but will never forget 2am indulgences with friends at the Inkwell, eating breakfast after partying in and around Long Branch on the weekends. Those were the days......

A blast from the past
By kateymore on 02/26/2008
As I was born on the Jersey shore, I spent many a late late evening at the Inkwell (in the 70s)..... I wish the original venue was still in tact, as it was such an expression of what the 60s and 70s were. I drank many a cup of hot cocoa with a bagel that tasted like heaven (at that hour and in that era).... Don't know if I would live those days over as I did have an episode or two of knowing a chair or two over......No one flinched.. What a wonderful place......... Looks so much different now....... Loved the old Inkwell.
