When the Ryland Inn first opened, the buzz could be heard around the country. The restaurant received a ton of four-star reviews, an "excellent" from the New York Times, and a James Beard Award for head chef Craig Sheldon. Things have calmed down a bit since 1991, but the Ryland Inn is still a very-special-occasion restaurant and one that demands to be taken seriously. The setting is country elegance, but the haute cuisine is as innovative, contemporary and ambitious as any big-city restaurant. The prices are also more Manhattan than suburban, so be prepared to drop a few bucks. Wine pairings, seven-course dinners and an organic garden that provides the herbs and vegetables on the menu make dining memorable. Dishes like the organic veal loin with mustard greens and ricotta gnocchi, or the warm tart of lobster with leeks and wild mushrooms all pack the "wow" factor. The grounds are lovely, so the garden terrace is a good choice in nice weather, but the elegant dining rooms are not too shabby either. If you have neither an expense account nor the required Benjamins to cover a dinner for two, then the piano lounge with a more casual and affordable bistro menu is the place for you.

A Diamond in the Ruff
By Chefjohnp on 11/09/2008
My first experience at The Rylan Inn was in 1972, when I was a young clerk at a nearby bank. I use to go ther for lunch once a week. Home cooking, nice atmosphere, one of the Black's daughters use to greet me at the door. I think I was in love with her. She was beautiful, and just the person who should greet all the patrons for lunch. Well, the years have past, and now I'm a little older, but now I'm a chef by trade and want to resurect that grand old palce to where it was in the 70's. Home cooking, friendly atmosphere, a place that welcomes travelers, as well as local people. Dinner entrees on the menu will cost you only $10.00. Drinks and desserts are extra. No more fancey cuisine, down to earth home cooking. Not that there was anything wrong with the previous cuisine. Chef Craig did a nice job. With the economy the way it is, things have to change. Familys are still more than welcome. If you are short on the tab, we'll trust you, square up the next time you come to visit. Whitehouse, New Jersey was and is one of the most loving and welcoming communities that I have ever worked in when I was 18 years old. The people are genuine, sincere, and have a down home friendly way that will just make you come back. Many of the people that I knew back in the 70's, have now passed on, but their memories and their country ways still are alive and living in Whitehouse New Jersey! I'm 55 years old now, and have two children. I've tried to teach them, not the ways of today, but the ways of "back when". The times when people cared for one another, when love was not embarrassing , but a way of life, when farmers gave to those who couldn't quite make it, when you asked your neighbor, "How are ya doing", and actually waited for an answer. We still must build a foundation before building a future. I'd like to do that with the Ryland Inn. All will be welcomed. Rich, poor, striving, or down on their luck. This is what America needs to do, get back to the roots that initially built this great country of ours. I really hope that I can pull this off. If I can, it will mean a new beginning for many people who long for the days when thay could leave their doors unlocked, their children can play in the yard, not fearful of anything, and bringing back to us a little bit of the past . It's my last chance to give back to a community that once gave me a chance. Wish me luck, 'cause I'm gonna need it.
