Rate and Write a Review When the Ryland Inn first opened, the buzz could be heard around the country. The restaurant received a ton of four-star reviews, an "excellent" from the New York Times, and a James Beard Award for head chef Craig Sheldon. Things have calmed down a bit since 1991, but the Ryland Inn is still a very-special-occasion restaurant and one that demands to be taken seriously. The setting is country elegance, but the haute cuisine is as innovative, contemporary and ambitious as any big-city restaurant. The prices are also more Manhattan than suburban, so be prepared to drop a few bucks. Wine pairings, seven-course dinners and an organic garden that provides the herbs and vegetables on the menu make dining memorable. Dishes like the organic veal loin with mustard greens and ricotta gnocchi, or the warm tart of lobster with leeks and wild mushrooms all pack the "wow" factor. The grounds are lovely, so the garden terrace is a good choice in nice weather, but the elegant dining rooms are not too shabby either. If you have neither an expense account nor the required Benjamins to cover a dinner for two, then the piano lounge with a more casual and affordable bistro menu is the place for you.
