The depth and variety of Skulls Unlimited's massive osteological collection would be enough to make your head spin -- if the thing weren't weighed down by the three pounds of hardened calcium that comprise your thick skull. A visit to the Skulls Unlimited showroom can be a real eye socket opener: If you're at all interested in the intricacies of the exoskeleton, a tour here is time well spent. Skulls Unlimited owner and president Jay Villemarette started out collecting and selling skulls in his spare time after high school. As sales grew, Villemarette and his wife Kim began to clean and prep skulls in their kitchen. Starting with a one-page price list in 1986, they turned their unusual hobby into a thriving mail-order business. In 1992, spurred by local and worldwide enthusiasm, the Villemarettes incorporated as Skulls Unlimited International. Since then, "Skulls" has earned a reputation as one of the most prestigious osteological museums and educational facilities in the world, claiming the largest variety of natural bone specimens anywhere. All of the company's natural bone specimens are legally and ethically obtained. Suppliers worldwide send skulls that would otherwise be discarded or destroyed. You can see all manner of human and animal specimens in the Skulls Unlimited showroom. From homo sapien crania suitable for use in Hamlet, to lemurs, birds, snakes, turtles, even rodents. Later this year, Villemarette plans to open the World of Nature Museum of Osteology: basically a large-scale upgrade on the current Skulls Unlimited showroom tour.
