The element that hits the strongest when taking in the Sutra Lounge is the air of romance. The decor is predominately a modern take on classically Asian elements with authentic details like an antique opium bed, an oversized statue of Buddha in the foyer and a stunning color scheme consisting of black, maroon and gold accents. Since the restaurant opens at dusk, the quixotic atmosphere is increased tenfold. The clientele is what you'd expect from a posh restaurant of this caliber: young-ish, good-looking, trendy and with money to burn. That's not to say the food is overly expensive. The exotic menu of lobster, shrimp, and game hen swimming in indulgent sauces and glazes is served appetizer style, which encourages one to order more ''entrees'' than usual. Factor in a couple of drinks from the bar's outstanding wine or cocktail list and the tab for two can reach a princely sum.

Sutra Sucks
By gwyneth96 on 09/06/2005
I heard that there were great looking people there so I checked it out. The line was ridiculously long. I expected the bouncers to pick and choose the best looking people to get in. I was dead wrong. The only people who were getting in were old, bald, and UGLY! (men and women). Definitely not the Newport crowd I expected.

Wasn't that bad

i read these reviews before heading there, and maybe because i lowered my expectations i wasnt all that put off. We did pay a hefty price for 3 bottles and a table but we walked past the long non-moving line at 11pm, so if you plan on going go early unless you buy a table. the environment was appealing to the eye, the place tended to be more on the sausage heavy side of the femal-male ratio (but what bar isnt), the dance floor is WAY too packed all the time, the waitstaff courteous, we made our own drinks so they were strong as hell. ;) overall i'd go again.

DON'T BOTHER WITH THIS PLACE
By rebecca6284 on 08/28/2005
I started out for dinner. I almost left until I spoke with the manager because they stuck me in a small bar table. The food was very good, but the atmosphere is not good. Even as a club, this place leaves alot to be desired in the 'class' category. It's an expensive meat market rather than a club.

one word: RIDICULOUS
By xdheckx on 07/01/2005
we arrived and they stuck us in a line that, after half an hour of waiting, didn't move and noone even looked in our direction with the slightest idea to let anyone in. all we saw were some loser bouncer with a cheesy job yet an ironically haughty air about them and a big buddha statue in the entranceway. can anyone say sacrilegious (mis)use of religious iconography?? (now 3x fast). humility, self-restraint, disattachment from lust and greed, etc. are far from what u will find here. i guess it wouldn't be "exotic" to the white customers to have a big cross with jesus shrouded in purple lighting in the entranceway. now would it? sutra sucks.
