It's a shame that Garf's is known mostly as a sports bar, because people averse to those typically boisterous places are going to miss out on the charm of this establishment. First off, yes, Garf's is predominantly a sports bar, but that's only because it has the requisite sports bar trappings like pool tables, electronic dartboards, tacky plastic beer ads hanging from the rafters and more television monitors than Circuit City's sales floor. But that's where the comparisons end. Garf's has an amazing menu with a kitchen that delivers the goods (for example, the baked half chicken with mashed potatoes is as good as any top-shelf restaurant in the area). There's also a wait staff that really does know all of the regulars' names. It's not uncommon for Garf's to charter a yacht and sail bar loyalists to Catalina Island for the day or organize an afternoon of golf just for the fun of it. You might not get a big hug the first time you walk through the doors, but give it a few weeks and be prepared to make a lot of new friends.

This place is not bad, I went here for lunch one day with a coworker since I work nearby. Figured by reading about it that it was mostly a sports bar, went in there were a bunch of tv's at the bar (seats mostly filled, and they all seemed to be showing news or financial reports... ) a few small tv's by our booth. We thought we'd catch a hockey game that was going on at this time. Waitress said, sorry they don't have hockey. Now, I've never been to a sports bar that doesn't have Direct TV or DISH network but oh well, we were there and what else to do. The food was typical, about what you'd expect (burger and fries, sandwiches, etc, but they seem to have a few entrees too). I didn't plan to drink during lunch, so I said I'd take a lemonade. Waitress said, sorry we don't have lemonade. I kind of chuckled and ordered something else... anyone who's ever worked at a bar knows they always have lemonade (or the ingredients) behind the bar for mixed drinks which is why every bar & grill always has it. Sugar, water, and lemon juice - takes about 60 seconds to make. Poof Other than that the service was a little slow at first but once she got going it wasn't too bad. They have a few pool tables if you're into that thing, but I'd give it a 2nd chance, maybe grab a beer after work. More booths inside than I expected, it always looked kind of small from the street. They have outside patio seating too.

garfs is the best bar in costa mesa. there is nothing better than walking in somewhere where we all know we spend obscene amounts of money and having the bartenders know you by name. thanks for the hospitality..
