The element that hits the strongest when taking in the Sutra Lounge is the air of romance. The decor is predominately a modern take on classically Asian elements with authentic details like an antique opium bed, an oversized statue of Buddha in the foyer and a stunning color scheme consisting of black, maroon and gold accents. Since the restaurant opens at dusk, the quixotic atmosphere is increased tenfold. The clientele is what you'd expect from a posh restaurant of this caliber: young-ish, good-looking, trendy and with money to burn. That's not to say the food is overly expensive. The exotic menu of lobster, shrimp, and game hen swimming in indulgent sauces and glazes is served appetizer style, which encourages one to order more ''entrees'' than usual. Factor in a couple of drinks from the bar's outstanding wine or cocktail list and the tab for two can reach a princely sum.

Sutra is a joke
By buddyunit on 04/29/2005
This place is a clown-convention. Packed with guys and little kids. The front door is run by a bunch of French and Eastern European jokers who brought their rude, arrogant, low-life, and obnoxious culture with them from Europe. The head meat-head is some some short little french-algerianish clown who just got off an Air France flight and thinks he's the head bouncer at the VIP club in Paris. His annoying accent and condescending grin is enough to make you want to rip his nuts off, stuff them down his throat, and fed ex him back to the slums of Paris. He runs the front door like a Paris night club, except for the fact that this joker has not figured out that he’s in a strip mall in Orange County. After your hours of standing in line you will walk into a loud, crowded, sausage-fest. Lots of cheesy guys and a few local hussys.

Too much of an stereotypical OC crowd
By calig97 on 01/28/2005
I was one of the lucky ones. My friend knew a friend and so we walked in for free and didn't wait in line or pay the $10/20 cover, but I've never seen a bar where the guys try as hard as the girls to be snotty, act better than you and try and deceive you with bad boob jobs, anorexic bodies and overly expensive clothes. I'm into a laid-back crowd, not the snotty scene I saw last night. Great dance music, but dance floor protocal was lost. I have never been on a dance floor where it seemed someone would purposely run into you or step on your feet. Overly priced drinks topped it off. I love a good scene, but the "beautiful people" put a bad taste in my mouth.

why the bad reviews?
By anachavezbmw on 01/18/2005
I know everyone has different experiences, but my first night there was great. My group and I didn't have to wait in line because we had a table reserved, and the staff outside treated us very well. And they charged us $10, not $20 like I've heard. The drinks were worth the price because they're bigger than some I've had at other places and the entire staff was courteous throughout the entire evening. Not to mention how beautifully decorated the place is; it just scored extra points for the whole experience. Definitely plan on going back again. Too bad for all the people who couldn't enjoy themselves there.

Nice Try
By brienlion on 11/11/2004
This place gets a grade of C from me. It got docked for having Hollywood Club type cover of 20.00. Drinks are over priced. I say, if you're gonna spend 20.00 on cover, go to a real club in Hollywood. Lousy bar service as well. This place just tries too hard.
