Newport's upper crust and those willing to blow a Franklin or two dine at 21 Oceanfront for two things: the food and the view. Located near the Newport Pier, the restaurant is a historic Newport landmark as well as one of the most romantic spots in the county. The grandeur of the Victorian era lives here in the candlelight glow, black leather banquette seating, mahogany furnishings and brass gas lamps. With waves crashing before you and hip Newporters cruising the boardwalk, you definitely feel like you've been transported into a time warp. Chef Richard Mendoza's culinary creations are more straightforward than the county's trendy dining spots, but that only lets you appreciate the quality and flavor unhindered by distracting flourishes. Start with lightly breaded abalone (a rare find), the Asian pear salad, Maryland crab cakes or lobster bisque. Mostly known for its seafood dishes like swordfish and lobster, the restaurant might have a true star in the filet mignon. An oceanfront bar serves a lively crowd and live light jazz starts at 6PM. With its own wine cellar (which can accommodate parties of 60), 21 Oceanfront is also famous for an impressive list of California and French boutique wines. The restaurant always offers special menus for holidays like Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day. You might even get a reservation -- if you book early. -- Sheryll Alexander

Still Fabulous

I worked at the restaurant when it was Alley West. That was before the Ritz bought it and the decor has remained nearly the same since the beginning except for the expansion. Rick Lawerence And Jerry Overland originally opened it . Rick also designed the hotel above. The abalone is still the best. All of the food is wonderful and the ambiance is great. - Glenda Miller

The Finest Seafood in the O.C. !!!
By dwdetrick on 06/07/2004
My wife and I have been dining at 21 Oceanfront for the past 20 years, through the various iterations of ownership. The secret to the continued success of this institution through the changing owners is its ever present Chef, Richard Mendoza. The menu has remained fairly consistent, and is expensive, but offers the very best and freshest Lobster (Maine and Australian), Crab and Hawaiian Fish (Mahi-Mahi, Opaka-Paka, etc.). The Seared Tuna Sashimi appetizer with sesame dipping sauce is out of this world! The Bananas Foster dessert is wonderful way to end a wonderful meal! The restaurant is romantic and the view of the ocean is unparalled!
