If you don't quite have the time to travel to the Far East to get your spiritual fix, the next best thing is only a short drive away down the Pomona Freeway. The mission of Hsi Lai, the largest Buddhist temple in the Western Hemisphere, is to serve as a spiritual and cultural center to those wishing to expand their background in both Buddhism and Chinese culture. Completed in 1988 after nearly a decade of planning, the temple, whose name means "Coming to the West," offers numerous classes, workshops and community activities meant to broaden Westerners' understanding of Eastern sensiblities. Events, most of which are in English, are open to all. Even those not into the Eastern philosophies can appreciate the architecture and history of the temple, which can be further gleaned through special tours, some of which even include a trip to the vegetarian buffet. Spectacular views from the temple's hilltop perch enhance the karmic experience.
