Good, but criminally expensive
By VIENLAW on 07/25/2008
I had my wedding reception there for 72 people. The food was outstanding (bone in rib eyes for everyone), as it should have been for $7,500.00, but they are completely ruthless when it comes to extra charges. They didn't ask us if we wanted bottled water, they just poured it at will, and then charged us, get this, $7.50 per bottle for it. Our bar tab was $7,000.00 (Again, that's for 72 people). Our water tab was $1,000.00 +, and that's for water we didn't ask for). WE put a $5,000.00 deposit down on the room/food, and paid the rest of the $2,500.00 fee that night, but believe it or not, when the check came at midnight, they added sales tax on to the entire $7,500.00 charge, the bar tab, and everything else they could figure out to charge us for. 8.25 % of almost $15,000.00 ($1,237.50) is a pretty big shock, especially when your getting taxed for renting something, not buying it. The final insult was the banquet manager bringing my wife and I a bottle of Moet White Star for our toast, telling us it was on the house, and then seeing a $200.00 charge for it on the bill, which just really pissed me off. At the end of the day, on your wedding day, what can you do but pay up. So we did, but I still resent how they took advantage of us so completely and thoroughly on what is supposed to be a joyous occasion.

Secret hint-- go upstairs!
By AlexxJM on 06/13/2008
Well, I think you have to see this place for what it is -- a fading bit of glamor from a bygone age. It does have great views, and it's kind of fun to see-- you can imagine '40s movie stars riding up in the elevator with you, along with the elevator operator. Little-known hint -- there's a very beautiful cocktail bar (yes, the drinks are stupidly expensive) upstairs from the restaurant where you can enjoy even better views in an even nicer ambiance. But, if you want to have dinner there, just accept that the food and service will be lukewarm and not so fresh, and will be expensive. It's too bad, because if the management cared to, they could make it much nicer.

I live in Long Beach and wouldn't go back.

The Sky Room catered an awards banquet for my organization. The service was horrible, food less than mediocre and not enough, surprised everyone by charging for parking after my organization already paid $300 for everyone to park, and wouldn't provide a microphone unless we paid extra. It was so bad, I stopped payment on the $3,000 check and made them renegotiate their fee.
