Mosey through this restaurant, and you'll see candles on every table and wine barrels stacked against the walls. There is a low, slanted ceiling and several isolated, semi-private booths. Tucked away in the corner is a tiny wine grotto (just for show; the real wine cellar's upstairs). Yes, it's a cellar -- but if all cellars looked like this, dining rooms would be obsolete. A lot of people think this is a French restaurant, but in fact the owner is Swiss and the menu mostly classic Continental. There are usually French specials, but the only menu items that never change are the classic New York pepper steak and chateaubriand. Dover sole and rack of lamb are always available, but the exact recipes vary. Special requests are always accepted. Don't overlook the lobster bisque, which some customers reportedly travel 100 miles for; and end the meal with either Grand Marnier or chocolate souffle. Order it early to allow adequate preparation time. The wine cellar, which holds more than 1,400 wines from 15 countries, has earned the Wine Spectator Grand Award for more than 10 years running. -- Lena Katz

Amazing evening

If you are like me, you will read through most of these reviews and try to find a middle ground to in order for you to make your decision about visiting The Cellar. Well, after reading some of the more critical reviews, my general response is: If you want your meal served to you by a 16 year old and be in and out of a dinner in 45 minutes, go to Denny's. If you want a delectably memorable evening that will allow you to relax and forget your troubles, come to The Cellar. I’ve been visiting The Cellar consistently for the past 10 years. I noticed it was a bit wobbly about 4 years back when it switched owners, but that was a mere bump in the road and would not have even been noticeable to most guests. Over the past 4 years, The Cellar has grown, matured, if you will, into nothing less than an enigma. It’s difficult to describe the nostalgia and history that lies within the walls down there and the culinary creations coming from the kitchen appeal to even the most sophisticated palettes. So as I said before, if you are looking for a quick, wacky evening with the gang, I invite you to visit your local Olive Garden or even the ever amusing TGI Friday’s. If you seek an unforgettable (and yes, affordable) dining experience and are willing to invest a couple of hours with your friends and/or family, I can whole-heartedly suggest an evening at The Cellar.

Can't wait to go back!
By sioux765 on 05/28/2008
My girlfriends and I went out for a girls night and decided on The Cellar, what a great choice!!!! Everything was amazing. The service, the food, the wine....EVERYTHING!!!!!! The owner was so friendly and made sure everything was perfect. I mentioned that we wanted a little something out of the way because we may be a little noisy. He gave us this big booth just adjacent to the bar so we could have a great time and not worry about being too loud. It was such a great night, next time we may even just grab a few seats at the bar!! Thanks again!

Amazing.

I frequented The Cellar a few years ago. I recently visited the restaurant again. My only regret is I waited so long to go back!!!! I absolutely love this place. If you want a restaurant where you can take your time and enjoy some great food, great wine, and of course your company, then this is the place to go. The new owner has done a great job keeping the nostalgia of the restaurant and at the same time has really added a sence of warmth. He came to our table and helped us pick out the perfect bottle of wine to go with our meal. What a great night. We'll be back for sure!

Best 5 Star restaurant in OC
By Geodobilas on 05/27/2008
Want a romantic place to celebrate that special occasion? Try the Cellar. It is back and in all its glory of the 80's. A new young, owner Ryan Dudley has brought this place back to 5 star status. A wine list that reads like a book of not only California but wines of the world. And waiters are trained to know what wines are in the house. Want a place for a memorable evening then go to the Cellar. The wine tastings are an outstanding value, check their web site for the next event. I will be there this Friday! Join me and I guarantee you will have a good time.
