Originally making waves in Hawaii, Duke's is a surfside tradition created in honor of Duke Kahanamoku, the man credited with bringing the sport of surfing from the islands to the mainland. Sister to its sibling locations in Hawaii, the Surf City restaurant/bar pays tribute to its roots by showcasing old longboard photos, boards and surf paraphernalia among the warm koa wood and lush plants that evoke a tropical atmosphere without resorting to campiness. Bartenders and waitstaff wear Hawaiian shirts and pareos, while bamboo and teak furnishings and trim further add to the island feel. As expected, the Barefoot Bar at Duke's Huntington Beach serves lots of mai tais and other wacky umbrella drinks. The menu is heavy on the fresh fish and seafood, but chicken and beef dishes are also available. The best part about Duke's is its stellar view of the beach and nearby pier -- perfect for watching the sunset or the surfers.

My wife and I have dined several times at Dukes, and each time we have had great food and GREAT service. Even on the busiest of Saturday nights. The food has been hot, tasty and to our order. As a matter of fact, we like it so much that on a recent trip to Oahu we checked out the Dukes in Waikiki for breakfast and dinner. Each visit we were served well and left satisfied. I must say though, there is nothing like the view in the morning out to the ocean. BREATHTAKING. Our next visit may be to Dukes in Malibu to check that out. Anyway, forget what the snobby, self important and impatient say. Go to Dukes and take the time to enjoy yourself.
