Located on a hill overlooking Newport Beach and truly surrounded on all sides by the circular Newport Center Drive, Fashion Island has become Orange County's most decadent open-air mall. This Mediterranean-style shopping oasis boasts more than 200 stores, restaurants and a movie theatre as well as OC's only Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale's and Bloomingdale's Home Store along with Macy's department stores. The mall may be better known, however, for its super trendy boutiques, which The Irvine Company actually scouts out from Orange County's best home-grown shops (Lola Rouge, The Closet) and as far away as Las Vegas (Talulah G). Kids also love Fashion Island for its interactive get-wet fountain, a Venetian-inspired carousel, a tiny kiddie train, a jungle-like koi pond and kid-friendly food court near the movie theatre (McDonald's, Wahoo's Fish Taco, Subway, Red Robin). Grown-up food runs the gamut from need-a-bundle gourmet (Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, Roy's Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine, Rouge Bistro & Bar, Tutto Mare) to mid-priced nourishing (El Torito Grill, Thaifoon, P.F. Chang's, The Cheescake Factory, Daily Grill, Cafe R&D) to on-the-go cheap (Fatburger, La Salsa, Pain du Monde Bakery, Pasta Bravo, Red Rock Chili). For a slice of the real OC, ride down the most scenic escalator anywhere (next to the carousel) for an ocean view like none other. Fashion Island's signature annual events are eclipsed by its super popular free Summer Concert Series on Wednesday evenings in July and August. Held the weekend preceding Thanksgiving, Fashion Island's tree lighting ceremony is always well attended and boasts the tallest decorated fir tree in OC with some 17,000 dazzling lights and sparkling adornaments. The Irvine Company also sponsors other numerous community events, which are held in or near the mall including Taste of Newport, Spirit Run, Newport Beach Film Festival, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and March of Dimes WalkAmerica.
