Even in Venice (the real deal in Italy), you rarely see a covered gondola floating in the sea on a romantic summer's eve. They're also not motorized like Joseph Munday's version in Newport Beach. For over 20 years, Munday has transformed himself into Giuseppe -- a singing gondolier -- and has been serving up Italian-style romance on his antique-crafted Venetian boat in Newport Harbor. Giuseppe claims that his six-seater gondola, dubbed The Crystal Swan, is the largest of its kind anywhere in the world. His aqua limo features cushy banquettes, candles, crystal, china and even a stained glass window. You can order up C'est Si Bon sandwiches and salads for a lunchtime cruise or go for broke with a three-course dinner from The Chart House. As you glide through Newport Harbor and under several bridges around Balboa Island, Giuseppe guarantees five "kissing opportunities," while he belts out another round of the Italian classic 'O Sole Mio.' Note: Giuseppe's one- to two-hour cruises are custom designed for each guest. Call several weeks in advance for reservations.
