Although outdoor Kitayama diners are subject to a variety of noise courtesy of the nearby John Wayne Airport and the adjacent 73 Freeway, the building's zen-like design and tranquil garden make it easy to forget those loud 747s roaring overhead. The main dining room is encased by plate glass, floor-to-ceiling windows, which give a perfect panoramic view of the restaurant's private Japanese tea garden (where limited and intimate seating also can be reserved). Like its decor, Kitayama's menu doesn't veer too far off Japanese traditions as evident by the massive sushi and sashimi selection (tip: sushi fans will appreciate the ornate sushi bar), the shabu-shabu, sukiyaki, tempura and a county-renowned Kobe steak. While the restaurant keeps children in mind with an abbreviated menu and seating accommodations, this is generally one of those restaurants where anniversaries are celebrated, engagements are made and special dates are planned.

A HORRIBLE PLACE- ANTI AMERICAN AND RUDE!
By michaelfood crit on 07/17/2008
A Horrible Experience. These people there and especially managment are apparently ANTI-American, RUDE, ARGUMENTATIVE AND GOD ONLY KNOWS WHAT THEY MAY SPIKE YOUR FOOD WITH. If you go - do not turn your back on them. No more "Pearl Harbor" style sneak attacks again for me thank you. Twice was enough, as there are so many other fine Japanese restuarnatns and their employees that really enjoy serving people politely, with no attitude - and with much better and fresh food. THEIR "FRIENDS/EMPLOYEES" CAN WRITE THEIR BOGUS REVIEWS, BUT THIS IS A VERY BAD PLACE. WHY RISK YOUR HEALTH AND DINING EXPERINCE TO THESE HORRIBLE PEOPLE. AND IT IS TERRIBLY EXPENSIVE.

Very Scandalous....
By missvvorid on 03/02/2008
We used to love this place and eat here quite often. Then we noticed that they had been charging our credit card $280 about every month, and these were on days that we hadn't even eaten there! It became obvious because the amount was always the same- $280. I have no idea why they would do something that shady at a nice restaurant. Needless to say, we have never gone back. If you go here, please pay cash, don't ever let those jerks get ahold of your credit card!

Kitayama Sucks!
By nippletongue on 07/31/2006
My friends and I have enjoyed the food their and have gone back on several occasions, despite the bloody awful service. Here are the reasons we are going to boycott Kitayama's. We had a reservation for 6 @ 1:15, during our lunch hour, and did not get seated till 1:35 and there were 4 parties seated ahead of us. The matre'd took our order while we were still in the waiting area and screwed them all up. When we finally got seated we were asked for our drink order and the waitress was rude and yelled for my friend to answer her. Our food came (we only got half the order and the other half came out 10 minutes later) and the waiter and waitress did not know who the food belonged to and we couldn't tell becuase the orders were all screwed up. We were not asked for any of our drinks to be refilled or if everything was okay. One of my friends ordered hot tea, and that never came. When it came time for the bill my friend had asked that they charge $22.50 and she was charged $30. The food was 3 out of 5 stars but witht he crappy service I would have to rate it 1 star. So if you like late food, missing drinks, rude waiters and waitresses, waiting to be seated while everyone else is sitting and being over charged $7.50 for your order then Kitayama's is the place for you.
