Chef-owner John Humphries serves delicious Southern-inspired meals out of his backyard in historic Ramos House. Built in 1881, it's one of Los Rios' most famous homes, and its location is so central, diners can hear the mission bells toll and feel the rush of air when trains rush into the landmark depot. As for the food, "house made" doesn't even begin to do it justice. John's inventive recipes are made from the ground up. Seasoning herbs are grown in the kitchen garden. Ice cream, pastries and even some of the cheeses are made on-site. For breakfast, try the sweet potato duck hash, a house specialty served with wild mushroom scrambled eggs and topped with collard green gravy. Cinnamon apple beignets and basil-cured salmon are also favorites. Popular lunch offerings include gumbo, jambalaya and a pulled pork sandwich. The chef also pours an outstanding Bloody Mary, but if you want something fruity, try the pomegranate mimosa.

Slip back into a slower, more comfortable and relaxing time... This restaurant is absolutely fabulous. It has the food quality of any the LA area, combined with style and heart. Every single item on the menu is meticulously created with the diner's enjoyment in mind. John Q. has created a dining experience where a person wishes to return as soon as they walk through the wooden gate. It is called comfort food for a reason...you simply will not want to leave....

Great ambiance, very interesting and well prepared food---a little overpriced for brunch---at $20 it would be a great deal.

There is nothing on this menu I haven't tried, and could not begin to say which is my favorite. This is my chosen place to bring discerning visitors. PLEASE, only tell those who have a discriminating taste about this -- never send those who simply eat. It's small, crowded and worth a wait. The ambience is unique -- feels as though you are enjoying your favorite aunt's good home cooking on the back porch.
