Describing itself as "a dramatic roller coaster ride" through history, the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace showcases the life of the 37th president. At the heart of the nine-acre complex is the wood-frame house where Nixon was born in 1913. Built from a catalogue kit by his father, it contains furniture from Nixon's childhood and sits on its original foundation. The library, which includes a museum and theater, opened in 1990. The archives are only open to scholars, but the rest of the complex bustles with public programs, holiday events, exhibits and free concerts. The museum's 22 gallery exhibits illustrate Nixon's political life from his days as a congressman to the Watergate scandal. Interactive displays allow you to replay the Nixon/Kennedy debates and other speeches. Don't want to go all the way to Washington to enjoy presidential splendor? In 2004, the library added a breathtakingly detailed replica of the White House's East Room, which has been described as "America's Grand Ballroom." Step outside and you're in a tranquil oasis far from politics. The landscaped grounds include a reflecting pool, the Nixons' burial site and a spectacular rose garden. Docent garden tours are available by request.
