Woody's at the Beach   

When people feel like swapping white sand for white tablecloths, they often head straight off the beach and into this restaurant. Casual yet picturesque, with great service and ocean views, it's a quintessential Laguna Beach hangout spot. In fact, its popularity as a local watering hole, specifically for the gay community, almost overshadows its reputation as a restaurant. Almost, but not quite -- the food has too many fans to simply fade away. Sea bass and filet steak are among the many favorites on the menu. Monday's special low-priced, home-cooked menu brings in people that might not be able to afford the regular menu prices, as well as those who simply like comfort food. The rest of the week, locals and tourists alike enjoy top-shelf martinis and contemporary Cal-Continental cuisine at beachfront tables. The bar stays open till the wee hours, and if the restaurant's busy, the owners are happy to keep the kitchen open later as well. -- Lena Katz
