Michael Kang is the owner and Executive Chef of the 5' Restaurant in Laguna Beach. Since 1985 Kang has served Orange County residents the best in non-traditional Chinese-French cuisine, creating masterful dishes that are unconventional to both the palate and the eye. Throughout the years, Kang has masterfully blended the gourmet cuisine of Mediterranean Europe with traditional Chinese fare and the results are often combinations that make diners do a double take. Entrees such as Crispy Jasmine Tea Smoked Prime Filet Mignon with Hoisin Foie Gras Sauce and Soy Cured Toro with Stilton Cheese are just a few examples that can be found on the flamboyant menu. Sunday - Thursday: 5:00pm - 10:00pm, Friday - Saturday: 5:00pm - 11:00pm

Over priced and no choices
By rameeti on 10/12/2006
We'd been to Five Feet many times over the last 10 years but things have changed and not for the better. When we arrived for our Sat 7 pm reservation, we were informed that there was a new policy of no menus. Everything that we would eat would be at the Chef's choice. We could indicate allergies, but that was it. What this meant was that at our table of 7, at any particular course, 3 might get venison, 2 people might get lamb chop, and 2 might get short rib. We found ourselves looking at other persons plates to see if perhaps we might be able to trade for something more to our liking. No one seemed to be able to have what they really would have liked. And being unable to request our preference for the doneness of the meats didn't help my wife who can't tolerate under cooked meat. We were so surprised with the no menu option change that we failed to ask how much it was going to cost us and were then floored when the bill arrived. For myself and my kids, the total came to $880! We had 2 overpriced bottles of wine but they charged us $75 per person with an already calculated 20% minimum tip. Way too much money to be told what we going to eat and no option to state how we wanted our meat cooked.

Prepare Your Palate!!

As a regular at Five Feet for the past 16 Years, Michael Kang never ceases to amaze me with his delicious array of French/Chinese cooking. Must try staples on the menu include Crispy Shrimp Tortillas, Macadamia Nut Crusted Halibut, and the "Whole" Catfish in a citrus tomato sauce. Daily specials may cause you to veer from the staples, but be assured that what ever you order will be a treat! Michael has an extensive wine list with French and California favorites among the vintages. After dinner, take a stroll around the quaint/arty village of Laguna Beach and enjoy!!
