Step inside this deliberately ramshackle barbecue joint and you'll feel like you're inCalifornia, but 300 miles north. Based out of San Luis Obispo, this mini-chain is the pride and joy of the Central Coast grill scene. It isn't Texas barbecue or Memphis barbecue or any one particular style, but instead, a mish-mash of all of them. The founders went on a coast-to-coast tour of American barbecue joints and borrowed the best of everything. Thus, you'll find Louisiana hot links, a Memphis pork rib sandwich and North Carolina pork shoulder sitting side by side on your table. The table itself might have come from a Philly saloon or a Santa Barbara garage sale. Texans wouldn't understand this philosophy, but in California, where regional 'cue simply doesnt exist, it makes perfect sense. The dcor in Huntington Beach hasnt quite achieved the level of back-country folksiness that the joints further up the Coast have -- how could it, with such a busy beach scene right outside? Surrounded by swimsuit boutiques, bars and pricey hotels, it dishes up barbecued pork sandwiches and hickory-smoked half chickens for a parade of hungry beachgoers and local business people.
