Rate and Write a Review Blue Plate Special: French and American sidewalk cafe favorites. Sandwiches, specialty salads and pasta. French staples such as pate and steak frites; omelets and crepes du jour. The Scoop: The sidewalk cafe is as ubiquitous to French culture as the burger stand is to American -- and it's much more romantic. It stands to reason that, sooner or later, the concept would catch on Stateside. Enter Vie de France, a chain of cafes that serve French-inspired food in an efficient, 100 percent American manner. The menu includes savory crepes, Croque Monsieur and that staple of the Parisian diet, steak frites. It also caters to U.S. tastes. The pastry selection is impressive. At the company's bakeries and Fast and Fresh cafes, the menu is limited to light fare. The Bakery Cafes offer a full menu, including dinner entrees. The Scene: The decor is comfortable and classy, if a bit bland. At most locations, you order at the counter, then find a seat in the polished dining area. It can get extremely crowded sometimes, but people move in and out of here very quickly. Lunch takes 20 minutes, not two hours, as is the French norm. It might not be authentic, but it works on this side of the Atlantic. -- Lena Katz
