It was emotional mayhem for loyal patrons of this longstanding Orlando gay bar when Southern Nights shut its doors for restorations in Spring 2005. But the brash belle is back and better than ever -- at least when it comes to the looks of the place. The top-to-bottom makeover includes new hardwood on the dance floor, revamped bathrooms (if you knew the old ones, you'll breath a sigh of serious relief), fancy lighting effects and an amped-up sound system. Gone are the drag shows however, a fact that has many Southern Night regulars in a huff. Still, the crowds pour in, particularly on the weekends -- Circuit Fridays feature two male revues by the Boyz on Bumby dancers, and Saturday's lesbian night stars go-go goddesses Erica, Asia and Karen. Some patrons gripe that the new Nights is trying to be too many things to too many people, but there's no denying the diversity of the place. On any given night you'll find killer drink specials, a packed dance floor and a happy hour club called Rendezvous, where you can meet similarly minded souls while playing NTN trivia and taking advantage of bargain-priced beverages.
