But one thing's for sure -- this tiny, family-run joint in College Park has been packing in the hungry masses since 1958, and loyalists swear Gabriel's has the best subs in town. The backdrop -- wood-paneled walls, a hanging photo of the owner with legendary Florida State University football coach Bobby Bowden, and a handful of booths packed with patrons -- is nothing fancy. It's the sandwiches that star. Baguette-style rolls are light and soft, and come loaded with the usual meats and toppings. And be sure to ask for the oil dressing -- the staff claims it's what brings out the inimitable flavor of a Gabriel's sub. The place gets packed at noon, when office workers and construction crews descend for to-go orders (the enormous hot and cold subs are one of the most affordable fill-ups in trendy College Park). Separate lines for takeout and dine-in business keep things moving. A second rush happens predictably on weekdays around 2PM, when nearby Edgewater High School lets out and famished teens swarm in for after-school snacking.
