An anti-establishment neighborhood bar seems somewhat out of place in this newly gentrified section of Winter Park, what with such uppity haunts as Dexter's, Hot Olives and Chez Vincent a fumble, trip and stagger away. But bringing a downtown vibe to these quaint and snooty streets might inject some much-needed diversity into Hannibal Square -- a concept shared by the husband-and-wife team of Dan Owens and Josie Fluri. Located a flight of stairs above the Ballard & Corum bakery, the dimly lit bar resembles a cross between a grotto and a backyard patio. Twinkling lights strung on beams and flickering candles cast a reddish hue on barflies savoring a sudsy selection from Belgium, Germany or the UK. There are currently six beers available on tap, with the promise of more to come (they're open to suggestions) as well as a limited selection of wine and, for those in need of a sobering beverage, Illy coffee. Just be sure to check the chalkboard near the entrance for drink specials. Owens and Fluri, who front the indie rock band New Roman Times, are also founders of the Mutual Admiration Society, a conglomeration of local musicians, artists and free spirits who gather here on the first Tuesday of every month to talk shop and build camaraderie. About the only downside is that the bar is forced to close at midnight because of the area's zoning bylaws, but that could change in the near future.
