Back Yard Burgers   

That old adage 'don't judge a book by its cover' applies whole-heartedly at Back Yard Burgers. This fast food burger joint blends in with the McDonalds and Burger Kings of the world, appearance-wise, but the similarities stop there. Prevalent in the South and Midwest, the chain was founded by a Mississippi grocery store owner known for his tasty homemade burgers. There's nothing pre-fab about the food dished up here. The Altamonte Springs outpost is overshadowed by the nearby Wal-Mart and Lowes super centers, but the steady stream of cars snaking past the twin drive-thru windows at all hours gives credence to the eatery's stellar reputation. The namesake 100 percent Angus beef burgers served up are shaped by hand (none of that cookie cutter business) and grilled to order over real charcoal, and the slightly smoky taste makes them all the more authentic. Order your 1/3-pound pattie straight up, or topped with Swiss cheese and mushrooms, bacon and cheddar, or a sizzle of the signature Miz Grazi hot sauce. While the burgers are by far the best option, other menu items include BLT sandwiches, hot dogs, blackened chicken sandwiches and even a garden burger. The thick hand-dipped malts make a satisfying finish. There are a few tiny tables inside, but most folks grab an umbrella-shaded spot on the patio or grab their meals to go.
