Backstage Billiards   

Although domestic beer signs and logos cover nearly every available space, Backstage Billiards isn't a beer-only kind of crowd -- not many pool halls stock up on Galliano and Irish Mist, even in a full bar. Unlike other offerings along I-Drive that cater to the out-of- towners, this place is primarily for the locals. Customers, mostly younger people in the hospitality industry, come to unwind, socialize and play pool in a relaxed atmosphere. The owners run a tight ship here, strictly enforcing a lengthy dress code that prohibits bandanas, tank tops, wool caps and even sunglasses. You'll find the occasional Sinatra tune on the jukebox, but most of the time the music blasting overhead is rock. The pool table fees are per person, per table but the time is unlimited. The place is busiest from Thursday to Saturday, when waits for one of the 26 pool tables can be up to 15 minutes. Some folks pass the time by playing darts on one of the six electronic boards or try a game of foosball. Food is available, but is delivered from local TexMex, Greek and deli restaurants. -- Sylvia Oliande
