Every city has a theatre known as the local art house, where you can see films that are too obscure or weird to play at the local multiplex. Orlando is no different. Since 1989, the Enzian, which previously hosted live performances, has been showing alternative (and mainstream alternative) films in its hip environment. Rather than sitting in uncomfortable bleacher chairs, you sit on one of four levels at small tables in cushioned swivel chairs, where you can order food -- and drinks -- from the wait staff that slinks silently around during the film. The Enzian's intimate but not cramped theatre also features surround sound and a large screen, keeping pace with its competition. The not-for-profit Enzian is also the home of the Orlando Film Festival. Parking isn't easy -- there aren't many spaces and the streets around the theatre aren't parking friendly -- but it's well worth the trouble.

It's the Only Show in Town

The Enzian, Orlando's ONLY art-movie house, is a good place to go see films, but don't go there hungry. Orders are taken by the wait staff and then delivered at least forty minutes into the film, so you'll sit there starving. Snack on something first, and get a glass of wine in the lobby before the film starts. Also, try to ignore the employees who stand inside the door and constantly open and close it, chatting through the movie. The Enzian feels like home to them, and people do whatever they please at home. And finally, it would be great if they alternated the movies they show. For instance, all summer they'll only show Farenheit 9/11, so that keeps me from going to the Enzian for weeks at a time. If they'd show something great like DE-LOVELY, which opens today, at least during matinees, I could actually see a film at the Enzian this month!

loved it

The Enzian is such a great theatre. Not only do they show great films, but the atmosphere is awesome. You can order dinner and drinks, and watch kick-ass indie/less known films. The only reason not to give the full five stars is that all the pretentious people won't understand why anybody would bother going to a theatre without stadium seating and half a million teenagers waiting for mom to pick them up outside. You should go as soon as you can. Don't bring any cheesy frat boys/sorority girls who won't understand movies they have to think about that don't involve special effects or $20million a film actors.
