Head away from posh Park Avenue for simple gourmet eats in Winter Park's 'other' hip locale, Hannibal Square. The chef dishes up inspired yet simple fare at Hot Olives, an airy eatery that resembles a California bungalow, complete with charming gardens and a shaded, outdoor terrace. Chalk this spot up as an idyllic date locale -- the music is always set low enough for conversation, and the peppy vibe and colorful decor are welcome backdrops for a romantic night. Start with the namesake appetizer: the spicy fried olives, breaded and oozing with spicy asiago cheese. The lunch menu focuses on salads and sandwiches, with a few fish and pasta options. For a light lunch, opt for the popular bleu cheese and spicy pecan salad. For dinner, the offerings are more substantial. Seafood dishes include fried catfish, herb-encrusted grouper and the Asian-influenced ahi tuna. Steak lovers can scarf Tuscan filets grilled in caramelized shallot reduction. The atmosphere is casual but eclectic; colorful paintings of olives decorate the wooden walls. Lots of greenery brings the garden feel inside. -- Terry Ward

I was so excited to dine at this restaurant, so much that I think that's why I found myself disappointed. It didn't exactly live up to my expectations. I thought the atmosphere and outside dining could absolutely not be beat-- but the limited menu proved not be their best asset-- not to mention the bill! Great place to meet for drinks, lousy for a nice dinner out (at least for people who ENJOY food).

I dined here with a group of friends over the weekend for our annual get together, before we all took off for the holidays. The service, atmosphere and food were great and even the chef came to our table to see how we like our dinner (a nice touch I thought). I will certainly return many times. Sitting outside (with that great heater on our table) really improved the whole experience. The food was authentic and delicious. This will be one of my favorite places now to go. We were told by one of the owners that they now have a new website...hotolivesrestaurant.com I just checked it out, nice site, cool!

The hostess on the phone was extremely nice and helpful. The hostess who sat us was very welcoming. The appetizers, especially the Hot Olives were very good. The dinner was melt in your mouth delicious. OH! AND YOU HAVE TO TRY THE SNICKERS MARTINIS! The only bad thing - it's billed as a romantic place to eat, but my wife and I went for our anniversary and were seated on the patio outside - right next to a loud, obnoxious private party. Also, to use the restroom, we had to walk through the private party to get to them. Not a big deal - but I was expecting romantic - as it's billed - loud, obnoxious drunks within earshot is not romantic. Other than that - I recommend!

sadly we dine at this establishment for lunch meetings due to its outdoor availability. however, the service is consistently terrible ... and the manager doesn't care.
