Head away from posh Park Avenue for simple gourmet eats in Winter Park's 'other' hip locale, Hannibal Square. The chef dishes up inspired yet simple fare at Hot Olives, an airy eatery that resembles a California bungalow, complete with charming gardens and a shaded, outdoor terrace. Chalk this spot up as an idyllic date locale -- the music is always set low enough for conversation, and the peppy vibe and colorful decor are welcome backdrops for a romantic night. Start with the namesake appetizer: the spicy fried olives, breaded and oozing with spicy asiago cheese. The lunch menu focuses on salads and sandwiches, with a few fish and pasta options. For a light lunch, opt for the popular bleu cheese and spicy pecan salad. For dinner, the offerings are more substantial. Seafood dishes include fried catfish, herb-encrusted grouper and the Asian-influenced ahi tuna. Steak lovers can scarf Tuscan filets grilled in caramelized shallot reduction. The atmosphere is casual but eclectic; colorful paintings of olives decorate the wooden walls. Lots of greenery brings the garden feel inside. -- Terry Ward

We had a petty pathetic experience. After arriving and having a drink we placed our entrée selections, waited over 1 hour for our soup/salads and then our entrees were served 15 minutes later. People in adjacent tables had already been seated, served and checked out by the time we even touched our food. We had empty glasses most of the evening and the chicken dish that a few members of our party ordered was dry. The maître d' forgot to tell our waiter that it was someone’s birthday in our party and then we had to put up with cigar smoke all night. So – all in all it was like eating at Bennigans!

I received the Olive Branch's new take out menu in the mail a few weeds ago for Nov. I was pleased to see they are now open Monday. After a long day at work I thought I would grab dinner and run, to my great surprise, I found that Hot Olives Restaurant is now open Monday nights again for the fall and winter. What a wonderful find, I stopped in for a glass of wine, a nice dinner and still had time to stop by the 'branch' for my lunch for today. While I was at the 'branch' I placed my order for a few side dishes for Thanksgiving dinner, anything to give me time out of the kitchen on that day. Great, great, great!!! 5 stars to both the Olive Branch and Hot Olives. You are doing everything right for me!
