The black and white simplicity of the "atomic" style is featured at Arenas Gardens West. Its white stucco with black trim is a demonstration of mid-century modern design, and all the rooms are furnished in a similar fashion. Like so many hotels in Palm Springs, the place is so small you could get a few friends together and rent out the entire property for a private party. The normal state of affairs is more sedate, though, as they cater mainly to seniors. The mountain views are nice, the poolside chaise lounges are comfy and there's a "green area" with a gazebo and a gas barbecue grill. If you're not in a cook-it- yourself mood, dining on Palm Canyon Drive is just two blocks away. -- Denise Fondo
