La Lupe in South Philly, on the seedy south end of the Italian Market, is a block from rival sandwich shops Pat's and Gino's. Restaurants at Ninth and Federal seem to come and go more quickly than the seasons, but La Lupe might have more staying power because it's a Mexican-style venue and isn't competing directly for the cheesesteak crowd. It's open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and serves cheap, often nutritious items, including tacos, burritos, sandwiches, appetizers, salads, burgers and platters. It's not your typical Mexican-style menu; you can get breaded chicken breast, steak sauteed with green jalapeno sauce, oven-baked goat meat or many other tasty dishes. The fish dishes include a tasty red snapper with vegetable, rice and beans. Mexican sodas and other soft drinks are served, but there's no alcohol. The space itself is lined with white tile and has walls of windows that open like garage doors. You can also sit on sidewalk tables under the awning, when weather permits.

Not exactly what you'll get in Mexico, but pretty close. If you're expecting Americanized Mexican food, you won't find it. Excellent.

I am sick to my stomach

On the outside, La Lupe looks like the real deal - and I felt good eating there - avoiding the chain scene and getting something authentic. What we got - was authentically awful. Nothing came as described on the menu, the service was horrible. We had to ask for water twice. The entire meal I was wondering about the cleanilness of the restaurant. As were were leaving, my suspicions were confirmed. One person in our party had requested a side of salad dressing (since they brought out her salad without any!). It came in a ramiken which she didn't finish. While paying our bill, I watched them take the dish from our table and place it back in the cold case at the front - to be used by another customer. Gross. Don't bother. I got physically ill after we left the place.

the worst dining experience i have ever had. the food was horrible. i ordered the enchiladas verdes. everything is overpriced and the menu selection is not diverse. my enchiladas were room temperature and my rice and beans were cold. i had already gotten into an argument with the waitress before because i brought in my cheesesteak from pat's as i was waiting for the food that i ordered. she said that i could not eat in. i said that i am waiting for my food and if you want me to eat outside i am just going to leave and am not going to wait for the food. she realized she couldnt do anything and left. besides this i have nothing good to say about the food. in addition they are cheap. i was with another friend and they give you a measly bowl of chips, if i was sitting alone i'd have my own bowl. we finished them quickly and asked for another one, she said she would charge me extra! (for seriously 10 or 15 chips)
