One of those well-kept dining secrets that regional foodies know and appreciate is a local establishment that's still going strong thanks to the loving consistency of its two-person, husband-and-wife staff. The BYOB, cash-only restaurant resides in a storefront in deep South Philly and comfortably seats about 40. It's a cozy place with a dark wood bar and stairs, rustic and romantic at the same time: You won't find an ounce of pretension in the place. As such, they like to keep the Italian menu simple. Try the broccoli rabe, mushrooms with garlic and parsley, baked ricotta with dried sausages and olives, or with an asparagus and vinaigrette dressing. For the main course you can choose from about a dozen elegantly prepared and presented meals. Try polenta and sausage, pasta with zucchini and basil, risotto with shiitake mushrooms, veal tortellini with sage sauce, or spinach ravioli with butter nutmeg sauce and fresh asparagus. Tiramisu, rice custard cake or other splendid desserts are available afterwards -- as is truly excellent coffee.

Delightful food

Top on my choice for regular stops on the weekend, Mr. Martino's offers a mouthwatering baked ricotta appetizer with the house vinagrette (which I have bought to use for parties and its always a hit), I can't seem to deviate from it. I really enjoy their Balsamic chicken but it is always a toss up between that and just about any otherdelicous pastas, fagiole or ravioli with asparagus and butter nutmeg, yumm! It is always best to go with my friends and share. Ending a fantasic dinner with the lemon tart, sunshine on a dish, just brings a smile to my heart! I highly recommend this place for get togethers with long time friends, family or dates you can't beat the atmosphere, cuisine and service! The whole package...

a perfect little gem

Go here for tiramisu that sets the standard. Definitely not a red gravy joint, nor is this the place for a veal chop, steak or lobster dinner. This is an intimate restaurant for diners who prefer simple, well-prepared and subtly tasty dishes. Mr. Martino's is the closest to a slow-food movement restaurant that we have in Philadelphia and the closest in spirit to the traditional, family-run establishments we all hope to find on our trips to Italy. Regulars and first-time customers receive the same warm welcome and the waitstaff is unfailingly polite. Mr.Martino's is a good example of how seemingly simple things require a certain amount of sophistication both to produce and to appreciate.

There are Better Choices!

Don't waste your money. There are only a few entrees (99 % pasta) and the portions are way too small. I had the cavetelli with tomato pesto which was served in a soup bowl and the pesto had very little taste. I was told it was fresh pasta, but it definitely was from a box. I am Italian and grew up with fresh pasta and this was far from fresh pasta!!!! Avoid the bean soup. It was mostly water and pasta with very little taste. The broth was too thin. The dessert was very disappointing -- overpriced for the portion. The tirimasu had a bitter taste. Coffee was not up to par for a restaurant. This restaurant seems to skimp on quality and it shows!
