In 2000, when former North Star Bar co-owner Peter Kelly opened North by Northwest (or NXNW, as it's often called) with local jazz musician Ron Berg and Berg's wife Roberta, some questioned the viability of such a venue in Mount Airy. After all, the neighborhood is a far cry from other hipster areas in the city like Northern Liberties. Plus, Kelly was putting live music, a down-home American restaurant and a bar smack in the middle Germantown Avenue, Mount Airy's small commercial corridor. But Kelly's gamble paid off. Not only has NXNW attracted some of the more interesting and diverse performers to come through town, but it's also become a gathering place for neighborhood residents. They stop by for the soul food (fried green tomatoes, pit smoked wings, mac and cheese, blackened catfish, barbecued ribs and pulled-pork sandwiches, among others), the bar (an Art Deco original restored on-site from a Chicago warehouse) and the laid-back vibe. Check out Low's Web site for special-events announcements such as free salsa and mambo lessons.

Very, Very, Disappointing
By robnitt on 08/27/2005
First, there was a $20 dollar cover charge for me and my fiance for "entertainment". There was a live band. We arrived at 9:30 pm and all the band did was rehearse. Second, they had the smallest menu I have ever seen. There were a choice of three appetizers and maybe ten entrees. The waitress brought us some bread that was hard as a bricks. Third, when the food came, the size of the portions was extremely small. I don't think the portions were sufficient for an eight year old. The little bit of food tasted o.k. I had the crab cakes and my fiance had the stuffed chicken that was supposed to be stuffed with spinach cheese, scallions, and rice, but was only stuffed with spinach. The place looks nice but that is about it. Save yourself the hassle.

NXNW is by far the best resturant in northwest philly. I go whenever I come home. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is so comfortable and welcoming, great music, and the staff is very friendly. If you want to have a delicious and relaxed meal definitely check out NXNW. The pulled pork sandwich and the spinach lasagna are my favorites
