Located on the Northeast corner of 13th and Spruce streets and billed as an economy hotel, Parker-Spruce Hotel is a dingy, grimy New York style high-rise that had me humming Leonard Cohens I remember you well in a Chelsea Hotel... when I entered its dark lobby. Although not for the faint of heart -- and definitely not designed with a business traveler in mind -- the Parker-Spruce has a good deal more personality than the Marriotts of the world. Some guests have lived there for years, a front desk clerk informed me, and there aren't always vacancies. The rooms are all furnished and there's a laundry facility around the corner, if you are the clean-clothes wearing type. Daily rates range from $37 to $53; weekly rates range from $105 to $146 for a single and $132 to $163 for a double. You can pay up to two weeks in advance.
